Pirates Power Past Butler

The Seton Hall Pirates kicked off a 3 game weekend series against their Big East foe, the Butler Bulldogs at Owen T. Carroll Field. The pitching matchup was RHP Zach Prendergrast vs LHP Jeff Schank for Butler. The Pirates got on the board in the 1st on an RBI groundout by Kyle Grimm which plated Zack Weigel and made it a 1-0 lead for Seton Hall. The Pirates added another run in the 2nd when Zack Weigel walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the 4th when Butler would answer with 4 runs and take a 4-2 lead. An RBI single by Garrett Christman and a 3 run homer by Austin Miller put Butler up 4-2.

The Pirates answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by Joe Poduslenko. In the 6th, Poduslenko hit a sac fly which scored Derek Jenkins and tied the score at 4-4. The Pirates would retake the lead in the 7th on an RBI groundout by Ryan Ramiz. Kyle Grimm added to the lead in the 8th with an RBI single to make the score 6-4. Anthony Elia came on in the 9th and recorded his 2nd save of the season and the Pirates took the 1st game of the series with a 6-4 win.

Zach Prendergrast worked 7 innings while allowing 6 hits and 4 runs. Prendergrast struck out 7 and walked only 1. His record improved to 5-3 on the season. Matt Leon came on and worked a perfect 8th inning and gave way to Anthony Elia who picked up his 2nd save. Danny Pobereyko took the loss for Butler. His record fell to 1-1.

The Pirates were led by Tyler Boyd and Ryan Ramiz who had 2 hits apiece. Kyle Grimm and Joe Poduslenko each had 2 RBI’s. The Bulldogs were led by Garrett Christman and Tyler Houston with 2 hits apiece. Austin Miller homered and plated 3 RBI’s.

The Pirates are back in action for game 2 of the series against Butler on Saturday at 1 PM. The Pitching matchup will be RHP Shane McCarthy (4-2) for the Pirates vs LHP Peter Nyznk (1-2) for Butler.

Pirates WIN

The Seton Hall Pirates opened up this weekend with a 3-0 win over Cornell. Seton Hall came within 2 outs of a no hitter. The pitching match up was RHP Zach Prendergrast for Seton Hall against LHP Michael Byrne for Cornell. Seton Hall struck first in the second inning with an RBI single by Mike Caputo. The Pirates tacked on 2 more runs in the 5th with an RBI single from Kyle Grimm that plated 2 runs. The score would hold and the Pirates picked up their first win of the young season.

The Pirates were led by Kyle Grimm and Mike Caputo who had 2 hits apiece. Jordan Winawer had the lone hit for Cornell in the 9th inning. The story of the game though, was the pitching performances for Seton Hall. Prendergrast was masterful, going 7 innings while allowing 0 hits and striking out 6. Sam Burum came in and threw another 1.1 scoreless innings, and Anthony Elia came through with the final 2 outs. Prendegrast picked up the win to improve his record to 1-0, and Michael Byrne dropped to 0-2.

The Pirates are back in action today for a double header. They will take on the #1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers at 3, and the Hartford Hawks at 7. In the first game it will LHP Anthony Pacillo for the Pirates against RHP Connor Jones for the Cavaliers. A Weekend to Forget in North Carolina

The Seton Hall Pirates played a double header on Saturday, looking to bounce back from their defeat on Friday. Unfortunately, the Pirates were swept in the double header by scores of 10-4 and 9-5. In the first game LHP Anthony Elia took the mound for the Hall and RHP Benton Moss went for the Tar Heels.

The Pirates got out to a quick start with an RBI double from Sal Annunziata to make it 1-0. The Tar Heels answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Adrian Chacon and an error by Kyle Grimm which made the score 2-1 UNC.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the third when North Carolina broke the game open. Tyler Ramirez got the scoring started with an RBI double, and Adrian Chacon picked up his second RBI with another single to make it 4-1. Logan Warmoth then singled through the left side and plated 2 more runs to make it a 6-1 game. RBI singles from Zack Gahagan and Wood Myers made it an 8-1 lead, and a sac fly from Skye Bolt ended the scoring.

The Pirates got back on the board in the top of the 4th with an RBI single from Chris Chiaradio. They added another run in the 7th on an RBI single from Kyle Grimm. In the 8th, Alex Falconi added an RBI single as well. UNC added one more run in the 7th on a Seton Hall error to make the final score 10-4. Anthony Elia took the loss, giving up 8 earned runs in just 3 innings. Benton Moss picked up his first win of the season, giving up only 2 runs in 5 innings.

In game 2, it was LHP Anthony Pacillo for Seton Hall against RHP J.B. Bukauskas for UNC. Once again, Seton Hall got on the board in the first with an RBI groundout from Sal Annunziata. It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 4th. Joe Dudek doubled to left center to plate 2 runs and give UNC a 2-1 lead. Tyler Ramirez then singled in the bottom of the 5th and plated 2 more runs to give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead. RBI singles from Landon Lassiter in the 6th and Joe Dudek in the 7th made it 6-1 UNC. North Carolina added 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 9-1 lead into the 9th inning. Seton Hall loaded the bases and Tyler Boyd cleared them with a double to left field to make it 9-4. An RBI single from Ryan Ramiz made it 9-5, the score would hold and the Pirates fell to 0-3 on the year.

Anthony Pacillo took the loss giving up 4 earned runs in 4.1 innings. J.B. Bukauskas picked up the win giving up just 1 run in 5 innings. The Pirates fell to 0-3 on the year and the Tar Heels improved to 3-0.

MVP of the Weekend: Tyler Boyd- Boyd had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s for the Hall this weekend.

Pitching Performance of the Weekend: Matt Leon- The freshman got it done this weekend. Leon came on in relief and pitched 4 innings while giving up no runs.

Number of the Week: 8.67- The Pirates allowed about 8 and a half runs per game in the 3 games this weekend.
