Sweet Sweep In Georgia

The Seton Hall Pirates were back in action on Sunday as they took on Nebraska-Omaha in Emerson, Georgia. The Pirates were looking to win the final game in Georgia after they had won the first two. The pitching match up was RHP Chris Morris for the Pirates against LHP Sam Murphy for Nebraska-Omaha. The Pirates would end up prevailing 2-1 over the Mavericks.

The score was 0-0 for a majority of this game. It wasn’t until the seventh inning that a team would get on the board. The Mavericks would get on the board on an RBI double from Sam Palensky to give Nebraska-Omaha a 1-0 lead.

The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the ninth. With 2 out and 2 men on, Mike Caputo would deliver a single to score 2 runs and give the Pirates a 2-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha.

Sam Murphy threw 5 innings while allowing 0 runs and just 2 hits. Brett Sasse took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season. He threw 3 2/2 innings while allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Ryan Cate gave up a hit to the only batter he faced.

Chris Morris threw 6 2/3 innings while allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Anthony Pacillo threw 1 1/3 innings while allowing 0 hits. Matt Leon picked up the win and improved to 1-0 on the season. He threw 1 inning and allowed 0 runs.

The Mavericks were led by Sam Palensky who had a hit and an RBI. Third baseman Clayton Taylor scored the lone run for Nebraska-Omaha. Cole Patterson also had a hit for the Mavericks.

The Pirates were led by Mike Caputo who had a hit and 2 RBI’s. Joe Poduslenko and Mikael-Ali Mogues each scored a run. Derek Jenkins, Jackson Martin, and Mike Alescio each had a hit for Seton Hall.

With the loss the Mavericks fell to 9-9 on the season. With the victory the Pirates improved to 9-6 on the season. The Mavericks will now face Fort Wayne on Friday. The Pirates will head home to take on Lafayette on Wednesday.

Pirates Hammer Hawkeyes

The Seton Hall Pirates baseball team took on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday in Emerson, Georgia. The Pirates were looking to make it 2 in a row down south. The pitching match up was LHP Cullen Dana for the Pirates against RHP Tyler Peyton for the Hawkeyes. The Pirates would end up taking home the win by a score of 7-1.

The Pirates jumped on top in the first inning. Mikael-Ali Mogues kicked things off with an RBI single to give the Hall a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Brett Fontenelli homered to drive in 3 runs and give Seton Hall a 4-0 lead.

The score remained 4-0 until the top of the sixth. Ryan Ramiz would hit a sac fly and increase the lead to 5-0. In the top of the seventh the Pirates added 2 more runs. Chris Chiaradio scored on a wild pitch and Mike Alescio scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Hall a 7-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes would get on the board in the bottom half of the seventh. Tyler Peyton scored on a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 7-1. However, that is as close as they would get and the Pirates would defeat Iowa 7-1.

Tyler Peyton took the loss for Iowa and fell to 0-3 on the season. He tossed 5 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. Ryan Erickson threw 3 innings while allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit. Shane Ritter threw one inning and did not surrender a run.

Cullen Dana picked up the win for the Pirates and improved to 2-0 on the season. He threw 7 innings while allowing 1 run on 6 hits. Zach Schellenger threw 2 innings while allowing 0 runs and just 2 hits.

The Hawkeyes were led by Austin Guzzo who had a hit and an RBI. Tyler Peyton added 2 hits on the day for Iowa. He also scored the lone run for Iowa.

The Pirates were led by Brett Fontenelli who had 3 RBI’s on the day. Derek Jenkins, Mikael-Ali Mogues, and Ryan Ramiz each had an RBI.

With the loss the Hawkeyes fall to 4-8 on the season. With the win the Pirates improve to 8-6 on the season. The Pirates next take on Nebraska-Omaha and the Hawkeyes next take on Savannah State. Until next time, Hazard Zet Forward.

PIRATES WIN!!!

The Seton Hall Pirates were back in action yesterday in the Big East Final against the Villanova Wildcats. The Pirates were looking for their first championship in 23 years! A win would give them an automatic birth in the NCAA tournament. The Pirates would prevail over the top seeded Wildcats 69-67.

The two teams started off fairly even in the first few minutes. The Pirates would build a 6 point lead after an Ismael Sanogo layup. However, Villanova would come back and cut the lead to 1 a few minutes later on a Kris Jenkins three pointer. The Pirates would respond by having a great stretch of play to increase the lead. With 5:14 to go in the first half, a Derrick Gordon three pointer put the Pirates up by 11. With 3:35 to go, Isaiah Whitehead would hit a three pointer and the Pirates would lead by 14. Ultimately the Pirates would go into halftime with a 40-29 lead over the Wildcats.

Villanova was led by Josh Hart who had 9 points in the first half. Kris Jenkins added 7 points and 2 rebounds. Darryl Reynolds chipped in 6 points and 3 rebounds. The Wildcats shot 44.4% from the field and 22.2% from beyond the arc in the first half.

The Pirates were led by Isaiah Whitehead who had 12 points and 2 assists in the first half. Desi Rodriguez chipped in 8 points in the first half. Ismael Sanogo added 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Seton Hall shot 56.7% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc in the first half.

The Wildcats and Pirates came out to a stalemate to start the second half. That did not last long though because Villanova made a charge. With 12:23 to go in the first half, Mikal Bridges hit a layup to cut the lead to 1. The Wildcats would tie the game up with 9:21 remaining on a Kris Jenkins three pointer. The Pirates would respond and after an Angel Delgado free throw they had a 5 point lead. The teams went back and forth for the next few minutes. With 52 seconds remaining, Kris Jenkins would hit a three pointer to give the Wildcats a 3 point lead. Isaiah Whitehead would then go to the line and hit 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead to 2. The Pirates would then force Josh Hart into a 5 second violation and get the ball back. With 18 seconds remaining, Whitehead would drive to the basket and get the hoop and the harm to give the Pirates a 1 point lead. The Wildcats had one last chance and would miss multiple opportunities. The Pirates ultimately came away with the Big East Tournament Championship by a score of 69-67.

The Wildcats were led by Kris Jenkins who had 23 points and 5 rebounds. Josh Hart added 17 points and 5 rebounds. Daniel Ochefu chipped in 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Mikal Bridges added 8 points and 6 rebounds. Villanova shot 42.1% from the field and 34.8% from beyond the arc.

Seton Hall was led by Isaiah Whitehead who had 26 points and 3 assists. Desi Rodriguez added 12 points and 4 steals. Ismael Sanogo grabbed 9 rebounds and Angel Delgado grabbed 7. Derrick Gordon chipped in 10 points. The Pirates shot 49.1% from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc. Isaiah Whitehead was named tournament MVP. Ismael Sanogo and Khadeen Carrington made the all-tournament team.

The Pirates capture their first Big East title in 23 years! Both the Pirates and the Wildcats will now look forward to their seeding in the NCAA tournament today. Pirates Edge Out Tigers

The Seton Hall baseball team was back in action yesterday in Emerson, Georgia to take on the Savannah State Tigers. The Pirates came away with the win in 12 innings by a score of 4-3. The pitching match up was RHP Shane McCarthy for the Pirates against LHP Trevor McKenna for the Tigers.

Savannah State took an early 1-0 lead on a fielders choice. The Pirates would tie the score in the top of the third. Chris Chiaradio would score on a bunt single from Derek Jenkins to tie the game at 1-1. In the top of the fourth the Pirates would take the lead. Ryan Ramiz would score on a fielders choice and the Pirates led 2-1.

The Tigers would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Left fielder Khalyd Cox would triple and drive in 2 runs to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. The score would remain 3-2 until the top of the ninth. Joe Poduslenko would single home Zack Weigel to tie the game 3-3. The game would go on to extra innings.

The Pirates would take the lead in the top of the 12th inning. Rob Dadona would score on an error and the Pirates would take a 4-3 lead. The score would hold and Seton Hall would come away with the win.

Trevor McKenna had a solid start for the Tigers. He threw 7 innings while allowing 2 unearned runs on 5 hits. Rex Davis threw 1 inning and allowing just 1 hit. Ryan McCranie threw 2 innings and allowed a run. Chris Hayes took the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season. He threw 2 innings and allowed 1 unearned run.

Shane McCarthy threw 8 innings while allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 11. Matt Ardente threw 2/3 of an inning while allowing 0 runs. Sam Burum picked up the win and improved to 1-0 on the season. He threw 2 1/3 innings while allowing 0 runs and just 2 hits. Anthony Pacillo picked up his first save of the season. He allowed 1 hit in the 1 inning he threw.

The Tigers were led by Charles Sikes who had 2 hits on the night. Khalyd Cox had 2 RBI’s for Savannah State. Mendez Elder also had an RBI for the Tigers.

The Pirates were led by Derek Jenkins who had 2 hits and an RBI. Zack Weigel also had 2 hits for Seton Hall. Joe Poduslenko and Chris Chiaradio each had an RBI for the Hall.

With the loss the Tigers fall to 4-11 on the season. With the win the Pirates improve to 7-6 on the season. The Tigers will now face Bowling Green today. The Pirates will face the Iowa Hawkeyes today.
