Finals Bound

The Seton Hall Pirates were back in action yesterday in the semifinals of the Big East tournament as they took on the Xavier Musketeers. The Pirates were looking to advance to their first Big East final in 23 years. They would ultimately accomplish that by beating Xavier 87-83.

The Musketeers came out hot and took a quick 5-0 lead after a three pointer from Trevon Bluiett. The teams would then fight back and forth for the next few minutes of the game. With 12:21 to go in the half, a Derrick Gordon layup would give the Pirates the lead. The Pirates would then begin to capitalize on some sloppy turnovers from Xavier. A Veer Singh jumper with 6:01 remaining in the half would give the Hall a 17 point lead. The Musketeers would fight back and cut the lead down though. Two James Farr free throws would cut the lead to 11 as the two teams headed to the locker room. At halftime the Pirates led Xavier 41-30.

The Musketeers were led by Edmond Sumner who had 9 points and 2 rebounds in the first half. Jalen Reynolds added 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. J.P. Macura chipped in 5 points and Trevon Bluiett and Myles Davis each had 2 assists. The Musketeers shot 30% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc in the first half.

The Pirates were led by Khadeen Carrington in the first half. He had 14 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds. Isaiah Whitehead chipped in 9 points and 4 assists in the first half. Derrick Gordon added 9 points and 3 rebounds. Michael Nzei and Angel Delgado each had 4 rebounds in the first half. Seton Hall shot 47.2% from the field and 36.4% from beyond the arc in the first half.

The second half opened with the big men from both teams dominating. Ismael Sanogo and Angel Delgado led the way for the Hall. Jalen Reynolds and James Farr led the way for Xavier. The Musketeers chipped away at the Seton Hall lead and with 10:43 remaining, J.P. Macura hit two free throws to cut the lead to 4. From there the Pirates would increase the lead again to as much as 15 points. Things got sloppy in the final minute for the Pirates. Seton Hall would keep their composure down the stretch and would defeat Xavier 87-83.

The Musketeers were led by Edmond Sumner who had 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. James Farr had a double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Trevon Bluiett chipped in 15 points and 2 assists. J.P. Macura scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Xavier shot 34.9% from the field and 26.7% from beyond the arc.

The Pirates were led by Khadeen Carrington who had 23 points and 7 rebounds. Isaiah Whitehead added 20 points and 8 assists. Angel Delgado chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds. Derrick Gordon had 10 points and Desi Rodriguez grabbed 7 rebounds. The Hall shot 51.8% from the field and 35.3% from beyond the arc.

With the win the Pirates advance to the Big East tournament finals for the first time in 23 years. They will take on the top seeded Villanova Wildcats. Pirates Take Down Bluejays

The Seton Hall Pirates opened up the Big East tournament on Thursday in a match up against the Creighton Bluejays. The winner of this game would go on to take on the Xavier Musketeers in the semifinals. The Pirates would come away with a hard fought 81-73 victory over Creighton.

The two teams had a close game for the majority of the first half. Halfway through the first half the Pirates led by a score of 18-15. The Pirates would begin to pull away though towards the end of the half. With 2:49 remaining in the first half Khadeen Carrington would hit a three pointer to give the Pirates a 14 point lead. The Bluejays would battle back and cut the lead to 9 as the two teams headed to the locker room. At the half the Pirates led Creighton 39-30.

Creighton was led by Cole Huff in the first half with 15 points and a rebound. Geoffrey Groselle added 7 points and 3 rebounds. James Milliken grabbed 3 boards and dished out 3 assists. The Bluejays shot 33.3% from the field and 38.5% from beyond the arc in the first half.

The Pirates were led by Isaiah Whitehead who had 11 points and 8 rebounds in the first half. Khadeen Carrington added 9 points in the first half. Desi Rodriguez chipped in 7 points and 6 rebounds. The Pirates shot 50% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc in the first half.

The Bluejays came out hot to start the second half. With 16:58 to go, Cole Huff would hit a jumper and cut the lead to 41-39. The Bluejays would hang around and would take a one point lead on a Malik Albert layup. The Pirates would again build up a lead but Creighton refused to go away. With 4:10 to go, Cole Huff would tie the game at 63-63. The Pirates would make some clutch baskets down the stretch though. Derrick Gordon made a huge three pointer down the stretch. Isaiah Whitehead make some big free throws and grabbed some big rebounds. Ultimately, the Hall would beat Creighton 81-73.

The Bluejays were led by Cole Huff with 35 points and 9 rebounds. James Milliken added 18 points and 5 assists. Geoffrey Groselle chipped in 12 points and Maurice Watson Jr. led the team with 6 assists. Creighton shot 41.1% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc.

The Pirates were led by Khadeen Carrington who had 27 points on the night. Isaiah Whitehead added 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists. Angel Delgado grabbed 8 rebounds and Desi Rodriguez added 9 points. The Pirates shot 50.9% from the field and 47.1% from beyond the arc.

Pirates Knock Out Highlanders

The Seton Hall baseball team was back in action today for their home opener against the NJIT Highlanders. The Pirates would come away with a 9-2 victory in their home opener. The pitching match up was RHP Zach Prendergast for the Pirates against RHP John Saviano for NJIT.

The Pirates would strike first in this one in a big way. In the bottom of the second, a single from Mike Caputo scored 2 runs to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. A Chris Chiaradio RBI single would give the Hall a 3-0 lead. Derek Jenkins would drive in 2 runs with a double to open the lead up to 5-0. Joe Poduslenko would add to the lead with an RBI single to give Seton Hall a 6-0 lead. Mikael-Ali Mogues would end the scoring with an RBI double to open up the lead to 7-0 after 2 innings.

The score would remain 7-0 until the bottom of the sixth. Derek Jenkins would score on a wild pitch to give the Hall an 8-0 lead. Chris Villa would add an RBI single to increase the lead to 9-0. NJIT would get on the board in the top of the eighth. Johnny Malatesta would score on a fielders choice to cut the lead to 9-1. NJIT would add another run in the top of the ninth when Matt Yuhas scored on a fielders choice to cut the lead to 9-2. The Pirates would end up winning by a score of 9-2.

John Saviano took the loss for the Highlanders and fell to 0-3 on the season. He threw 1 2/3 innings while allowing 7 runs on 6 hits. Brent Jones threw 1 1/3 innings while allowing no runs. Andres Fernandez threw 1 1/3 innings while allowing no runs. Tommy Derer threw 2/3 of an inning while allowing 1 earned run. Justin Chin (2 innings), Chris Gibbons (1/3 of an inning), and Brett Lubreski (2/3 of an inning) all allowed 0 runs.

Zach Prendergast picked up the win for Seton Hall and improved to 2-2 on the season. He threw 6 innings while allowing 0 runs and just 4 hits. Anthony Pacillo threw 1 inning while allowing 0 runs. Zach Schellenger threw 2/3 of an inning while allowing 1 unearned run. Sam Burum retired the only batter he faced. Andrew Politi allowed 1 run. Matt Leon threw 1 inning while allowing 0 runs.

The Highlanders were led by Jesse Uttendorfer who had 2 hits on the day. Rex Macmillan and Stephan Halibej each had an RBI for NJIT. Matt Yuhas and Johnny Malatesta each scored a run for the Highlanders.

The Pirates were led by Joe Poduslenko who had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Mikael-Ali Mogues also had 2 hits for the Pirates. Center fielder Derek Jenkins and second baseman Mike Caputo each had 2 RBI’s.

With the loss the Highlanders fall to 3-8 on the season. With the win the Pirates improve to 6-6 on the season. The Highlanders will head to Maryland on Saturday to take on Coppin State. Pirates Halt Hoosiers

The Seton Hall baseball team was back in action today as they took on the Indiana Hoosiers in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Pirates were looking to make it two wins against Indiana this season. The Pirates would deliver a 6-4 win over the Hoosiers. The pitching match up was RHP Chris Morris for the Pirates against RHP Evan Bell for Indiana.

The Hoosiers would get on the board in the bottom of the first. Center fielder Craig Dedelow would single and score Alex Krupa to give Indiana a 1-0 lead. The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the third. Luke Miller would hit an RBI single to give IU a 2-0 lead. Isaiah Pasteur would add an RBI single of his own to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Pirates would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth. Ryan Ramiz would single home Joe Poduslenko to cut the lead to 3-1. The Pirates would have a big top of the seventh. Derek Jenkins would hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 3-2. Mike Caputo would then score on a fielders choice to tie the game at 3. Mikael-Ali Mogues would then single to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

The Pirates held their 4-3 lead until the bottom of the ninth. Austin Cangelosi would triple with one out. Scotty Bradley would then single and tie the game up at 4-4. The Pirates would take the lead in the top of the 10th. Mike Alescio would score on a throwing error to give Seton Hall a 5-4 lead. Sebastiano Santorelli would score on a bunt to give the Hall a 6-4 lead. The Pirates would hold that lead and win 6-4.

The starter, Evan Bell pitched very well in this game. He threw 6 innings while allowing 1 run on 7 hits. Jonathan Stiever game up 3 unearned runs in 1 inning. Jake Kelzer took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season. He threw 3 innings while allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits.

Chris Morris threw 5 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Sam Burum threw 1 1/3 innings while allowing 1 hit. Matt Leon threw 2 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Anthony Pacillo picked up the win and improved to 2-0 on the season. He threw 1 2/3 innings while allowing just 1 hit.

The Hoosiers had a number of solid contributors. Isaiah Pasteur, Craig Dedelow, and Luke Miller each had 2 hits and an RBI. Scotty Bradley also had an RBI for Indiana. Tony Butler had 2 hits for the Hoosiers.

The Pirates were led by Mikael-Ali Mogues and Ryan Ramiz each had 3 hits and an RBI. Mike Alescio and Mike Caputo each had 3 hits for Seton Hall. Chris Chiaradio, Derek Jenkins, and Jackson Martin all had an RBI.

With the loss the Hoosiers fall to 2-7 on the season. With the win the Pirates improve to 5-6 on the year. The Hoosiers will now take on Butler in Port Charlotte in the finale of the Snowbird Classic. The Pirates will head back to New Jersey for their home opener on Wednesday against the NJIT Highlanders.
