A Weekend to Forget in North Carolina

The Seton Hall Pirates played a double header on Saturday, looking to bounce back from their defeat on Friday. Unfortunately, the Pirates were swept in the double header by scores of 10-4 and 9-5. In the first game LHP Anthony Elia took the mound for the Hall and RHP Benton Moss went for the Tar Heels.

The Pirates got out to a quick start with an RBI double from Sal Annunziata to make it 1-0. The Tar Heels answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Adrian Chacon and an error by Kyle Grimm which made the score 2-1 UNC.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the third when North Carolina broke the game open. Tyler Ramirez got the scoring started with an RBI double, and Adrian Chacon picked up his second RBI with another single to make it 4-1. Logan Warmoth then singled through the left side and plated 2 more runs to make it a 6-1 game. RBI singles from Zack Gahagan and Wood Myers made it an 8-1 lead, and a sac fly from Skye Bolt ended the scoring.

The Pirates got back on the board in the top of the 4th with an RBI single from Chris Chiaradio. They added another run in the 7th on an RBI single from Kyle Grimm. In the 8th, Alex Falconi added an RBI single as well. UNC added one more run in the 7th on a Seton Hall error to make the final score 10-4. Anthony Elia took the loss, giving up 8 earned runs in just 3 innings. Benton Moss picked up his first win of the season, giving up only 2 runs in 5 innings.

In game 2, it was LHP Anthony Pacillo for Seton Hall against RHP J.B. Bukauskas for UNC. Once again, Seton Hall got on the board in the first with an RBI groundout from Sal Annunziata. It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 4th. Joe Dudek doubled to left center to plate 2 runs and give UNC a 2-1 lead. Tyler Ramirez then singled in the bottom of the 5th and plated 2 more runs to give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead. RBI singles from Landon Lassiter in the 6th and Joe Dudek in the 7th made it 6-1 UNC. North Carolina added 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 9-1 lead into the 9th inning. Seton Hall loaded the bases and Tyler Boyd cleared them with a double to left field to make it 9-4. An RBI single from Ryan Ramiz made it 9-5, the score would hold and the Pirates fell to 0-3 on the year.

Anthony Pacillo took the loss giving up 4 earned runs in 4.1 innings. J.B. Bukauskas picked up the win giving up just 1 run in 5 innings. The Pirates fell to 0-3 on the year and the Tar Heels improved to 3-0.

MVP of the Weekend: Tyler Boyd- Boyd had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s for the Hall this weekend.

Pitching Performance of the Weekend: Matt Leon- The freshman got it done this weekend. Leon came on in relief and pitched 4 innings while giving up no runs.

Number of the Week: 8.67- The Pirates allowed about 8 and a half runs per game in the 3 games this weekend.

The Pirates will be back in action this weekend in Norfolk, Virginia to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs in a 3 game series. The Pirates will be looking to get back on track, and we will have full coverage of all 3 games. Until then, Hazard Zet Forward.

Pirates Fall Flat in Opener

The Seton Hall Pirates baseball team kicked off the 2015 season against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Pirates wound up falling to the Tar Heels by a score of 7-1. The pitching match up was RHP Luke Cahill for the Pirates against RHP Trent Thornton for the Tar Heels. It did not take long for the Pirates to get in trouble. After retiring the first 2 batters, Cahill gave up a single to Skye Bolt. The next batter was Tyler Ramirez and he deposited one over the right center field fence to make it 2-0 UNC. In the bottom of the 2nd the Pirates deficit grew larger as Joe Dudek homered to right and increased the lead to 3-0. The Pirates finally got on the board in the top of the 4th. Sal Annunziata singled up the middle and Kyle Grimm came in to score to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Tar Heels answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI ground out from Logan Warmoth to make it 4-1. They added to their lead in the 5th with a sac fly from Landon Lassiter, and then added 2 more runs in the 7th with RBI singles by Skye Bolt and Wood Myers. When it was all said in done, the Pirates would fall to the Tar Heels 7-1.

For the Pirates, Luke Cahill lasted just 1.1 innings while giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits. He took the loss and fell to 0-1 on the season. Sam Burum came on in relief and threw 6.2 innings while giving up 6 hits and 4 earned runs. For the Tar Heels, Trent Thornton threw 4.1 innings giving up 1 run and striking out 6. Spencer Trayner came on for 2.2 innings giving up just one hit while striking out 2. Trayner earned the win and improved to 1-0. Hansen Butler and A.J. Bogucki each threw an inning of scoreless relief to close it out.

The Pirates were led by CF Derek Jenkins and 3B Kyle Grimm who had 2 hits apiece. Sal Annunziata had the lone RBI for the Pirates. The Tar Heels were led by SS Wood Myers and CF Skye Bolt who had 2 hits a piece. Right fielder Tyler Ramirez homered and had 2 RBI’s and DH Joe Dudek also homered.

These two teams will play a double header today starting at 11 AM to close out their 3 game series. The first game will feature LHP Anthony Elia for the Pirates matched up with RHP Benton Moss for the Tar Heels. In the second half of the double header it will be LHP Anthony Pacillo for Seton Hall against RHP J.B. Bukauskas for North Carolina.

Pirates Prepare for Tarheels

The Seton Hall Pirates will begin the 2015 baseball season in Chapel Hill, North Caroline on Friday, February 13. The Pirates will square off with the North Carolina Tarheels in a 3 game weekend series. No word yet on the probable starters for either team. North Carolina finished last season with a record of 35-27 and an NCAA tournament appearance.

2015 Pirates Baseball

The Seton Hall Pirates are getting ready to start the 2015 season. They will be playing a tough schedule and should be up to the task. The first series starts on Friday, February 13 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They will square off with the North Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina is starting at #15 in the coaches poll. Seton Hall will be bringing back seniors Tyler Boyd, Dan Ditusa, Anthony Elia, Alex Falconi, Kyle Grimm, D.J. Ruhlman, and Sal Annunziata. We will have more previews to come as we get ready for another great baseball season at the Hall. We would also like to congratulate Seton Hall Pirate Craig Biggio on his election to the Hall of Fame.
