The Seton Hall Pirates got their 6th and 7th wins of the year in a double header on Sunday against the Arizona Wildcats. The first game was a continuation of the Saturday game which was postponed due to rain in the 4th inning. Seton Hall defeated Arizona in the first game 4-2. After Anthony Elia pitched 3 scoreless innings on Saturday, the rain came and forced the Pirates to start Sam Burum on Sunday. Burum pitched 2 innings and scattered 2 hits to pick up his first win of the season, while Conor Krauss pitched 2.1 innings and got his second save of the season. The Pirates took the early lead on Saturday with a homerun off the bat of Tyler Boyd. Then the rain came and forced the game to be continued on Sunday. When the game continued, it was Boyd again playing a key role. Boyd drove a double to left center field to score 2 runs in the 6th inning. The other Seton Hall run of the contest came in the 8th on a Sal Annunziata RBI single. Trent Gilbert and Kevin Newman had the RBI’s for the Wildcats. Conor Krauss worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th to pick up his second save.
The second game of the double header featured Seton Hall’s RHP Luke Cahill matching up with Arizona RHP Morgan Earman. The Pirates struck in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI single by Kyle Grimm. The Pirates never looked back, pounding out 11 runs en route to an 11-2 win and a sweep of the Arizona Wildcats. Seton Hall was led by SS D.J. Ruhlman who had 4 hits and scored 3 runs. Center fielder Zack Weigel had 3 hits and 2 RBI’s and right fielder Chris Selden had 2 hits and 4 RBI’s. Luke Cahill improved his record to 2-1 on the young season by going 5 innings while allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 3. Joe DiBenedetto and Steven Lombardi followed with 3 scoreless innings to close out the game. Arizona got its 2 runs in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by Willie Calhoun and a ground out by catcher Jordan Berger. Arizona’s Morgan Earman fell to 1-1 on the year.
The Pirates have bounced back well after losing 2 out of 3 in Oklahoma. In the latest poll the Pirates are now the #22 ranked team in all of college baseball. We called it here first, and we hope to see continued strong performances from this team. This team is something special and looks to have a very strong season ahead of them. The Pirates will be back in action this weekend against the James Madison University Dukes. Game 1 will feature RHP Josh Prevost for Seton Hall squaring off with RHP Patrick Toohers for James Madison. We will have a full recap of game 1 on Saturday morning.
We would also like to congratulate Seton Hall RHP Josh Prevost for being named Big East pitcher of the week and SS D.J. Ruhlman who made the Big East honor roll. Until next time, Hazard Zet Forward.
