Pirates Down Jaspers In Home Opener

The Seton Hall Pirates finally got to open up their home schedule against the Manhattan College Jaspers at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates rode their ace Josh Prevost to a 2-0 victory in game 1 of the 3 game weekend series. It was Prevost matching up with Manhattan’s RHP Joey Rocchietti. The Pirates got on the board in the first inning, when third baseman Kyle Grimm hit a sacrifice fly to center field and brought home center fielder Zack Weigel. The Pirates were held off the board until the 7th inning when catcher Dillon Hamlin scored on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Chris Chiaradio. This was a classic pitching duel though, Prevost and Rocchietti were both excellent in this game. Rocchietti took the loss on a complete game effort. He allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits while striking out 2. With the loss Rocchietti falls to 1-2 on the season. The story of the game was Josh Prevost. He was simply masterful in picking up the win to improve his record to a perfect 5-0. Prevost allowed just 4 hits while striking out 6 and surrendering no walks. This was the first career complete game shutout for Josh Prevost. Prevost has been dominant so far this season, picking up the win in the first game of each series this season. The Pirates were led by Kyle Grimm who had 2 hits as well as an RBI. D.J. Ruhlman, Sal Annunziata, Dillon Hamlin, and Chris Selden all hat a hit apiece for the Pirates.

The Pirates will be back in action tomorrow for the second game of the series against the Manhattan Jaspers. The pitching matchup is LHP Anthony Elia (1-2) for Seton Hall, up against LHP Mike Martin (0-2) for Manhattan. Elia is looking to bounce back from a rough outing against the James Madison Dukes. Elia took the loss, going just 4 innings while allowing 7 runs. For Manhattan, Martin is coming off of a loss to Florida Gulf Coast where he allowed 9 hits and 3 earned runs in 6.1 innings. Pirates Set To Take On Jaspers

Seton Hall will finally have its home opener tomorrow against the Manhattan College Jaspers. The pitching matchup for the first game of the series will be RHP Josh Prevost for the Pirates going up against RHP Joey Rocchietti for Manhattan. Prevost has been Mr. Consistency this year for the Pirates, posting a 4-0 record with a 2.40 ERA. Prevost has struck out 26 batters and walked only 4, for a 6.5:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Seton Hall is coming off some impressive offensive performances, scoring 37 runs in the series against the James Madison Dukes. The Pirates have been led by SS D.J. Ruhlman, who has 20 hits and 13 runs scored this year. Third baseman Kyle Grimm and first baseman Sal Annunziata are right behind with 19 hits apiece. Grimm is tied with right fielder Chris Selden for most runs scored with 15. Annunziata leads in several offensive categories. He leads the team in doubles (8) and RBI’s (15), and is second in total bases with 27. Tyler Boyd,  Mikael-Ali Mogues, and Ruhlman are all tied for the lead in homeruns with 2 apiece.

Manhattan has gotten off to a tough start, going 2-10 through their first 12. The Pirates have gotten off to a hot start this season, going 9-3 on the road. They will hope to carry that momentum into their first game at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15. Pirates Finish Off Dukes

The Seton Hall University baseball team took the final game of the series against James Madison, by pounding out 24 hits and 19 runs en route to a 19-4 victory. With the victory Seton Hall takes 2 out of 3 from the Dukes and wins their third straight series. Seton Hall wasted little time getting on the board. In the top of the first SS D.J. Ruhlman homered to right center field, his second homerun of the season. Up next was third baseman Kyle Grimm who would not be outdone, blasting his first homerun of the season to center field. This is the first time that the Pirates have gone back to back this season. The Pirates scored in all but 1 inning, the third inning. The Pirates were led by center fielder Zack Weigel who had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Every starter for Seton Hall had an RBI. Third baseman Kyle Grimm had 4 hits and 2 RBI’s, Sal Annunziata had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s and Chris Selden also contributed 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Pinch hitter Mikael-Ali Mogues came in for Sal Annunziata and after a walk in the 8th, he hit a two run homer in the 9th. The homerun was the third of the day for the Pirates and second of the season for Mogues. The Pirates pitching combination of Luke Cahill (3.1 innings), Joe DiBenedetto (2.2 innings), Steven Lombardi (1 inning), and Conor Krauss (2 innings, held the Dukes offense to 4 runs. The same Dukes offense who scored 11 runs the game before. DiBenedetto picked up his first win with his 2.2 innings of solid work, where he allowed 3 hits and no runs. The Dukes struck for their first run in the bottom of the second inning on an inside the park homerun by SS Kyle Weston. In the third inning, Ty McFarland doubled and brought home Kevin Husum. Later in the inning, first baseman Matt Tenaglia and brought home McFarland. James Madison was held off the board until the 8th when right fielder Tyler Gregory singled and brought home Josh Wyatt. James Madison pitcher Mark Gunst took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season. Gunst went 11 hits while giving up 7 runs, but only 4 were earned. The 24 hits were the third most given up in the history of the James Madison baseball program.

The Seton Hall baseball team is back in action on Friday for what they hope will be the home opener against the Manhattan Jaspers. The game against Lehigh was supposed to be the home opener but it was cancelled due to the field being unplayable. The Dukes of James Madison will be back in action tomorrow in Charlottesville, Virginia to face the #3 ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers. Seton Hall improved to 9-3 with the win and James Madison falls to 7-8. We will have a full recap of game 1 against Manhattan, as well as any weather delays or postponements that may arise. Dukes Dominate, Even Series

The Seton Hall University baseball team was coming off of a blowout on Saturday, so James Madison returned the favor with a blowout of their own. James Madison rode 14 hits and 11 runs to their 7th win of the season, an 11-3 victory over the Pirates. The pitching matchup was Seton Hall LHP Anthony Elia against James Madison RHP Chris Huffman. The James Madison Dukes got on the board first in the 2nd inning. Designated hitter Josh Wyatt singled home the first run, then SS Kyle Weston scored on a wild pitch. Left fielder Chad Carroll singled and brought home Wyatt as well as Tyler Gregory to end the scoring in the 2nd. James Madison added 3 runs apiece in the 5th and 6th innings, as well as another run in the 7th to complete the scoring. The Dukes were led by Carroll who had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Kyle Weston had 3 hits, and Kevin Husum, Ty McFarland, and Carroll each scored 2 runs. James Madison got a great performance from Chris Huffman who improved to 3-1 with a complete game effort. Huffman scattered 8 hits, while giving up three runs and striking out 4. Seton Hall was held off of the board until the 7th inning when Kyle Grimm scored on an RBI ground out by Alex Falconi. The Pirates added another run on an RBI single by D.J. Ruhlman. The other Seton Hall run came in the 9th inning on the second homerun of the season by Tyler Boyd. For Seton Hall, Jackson Martin, Ruhlman, and Boyd each had 2 hits. Seton Hall pitcher Anthony Elia fell to 1-2 on the year as he only lasted 4 innings in this contest. Seton Hall falls to 8-3 and James Madison improved to 7-7. The loss snapped a 7 game win streak for the Pirates

The two teams will be back in action in Harrisonburg, Virginia for the rubber game of the series. RHP Luke Cahill will be going for the Pirates who look to bounce back.
