Pirates Overcome Slow Start, Take Down Troy

The Seton Hall Pirates were back in action today against the Troy Trojans. The Pirates ended up coming out with a 78-69 victory. The Pirates improved to 7-2 on the season. With the loss the Trojans fell to 4-5 on the season. The Pirates also improved to 4-o on the year at the home.

The Pirates came out hot to start the game. Seton Hall jumped out to an early 11-2 lead on the strength of a Khadeen Carrington three pointer and the play making ability of Isaiah Whitehead. However, Troy would respond with a run of their own. With the Pirates offense slowing to a crawl, the Trojans built a lead that grew to as much as 8 points with 7:13 to go in the 1st half. From there the Pirates started to reassert themselves. By the end of the first half, the Pirates would hold a 36-30 lead.

In the 1st half the Pirates were led by Isaiah Whitehead who had 10 points. Desi Rodriguez has 9 points and 5 rebounds, and Michael Nzei chipped in 8 points and 4 boards. The Trojans were led by Jordon Varnado who had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Wesley Person chipped in 9 points, and John Walton III had 5 rebounds.

In the second half the Pirates started to find their groove offensively. Khadeen Carrington kicked off the scoring in the half with a three pointer and the Pirates would never look back. The Pirates never trailed in the second half and built a lead that was as large as 15 at one point. The biggest highlight of the second half came from Desi Rodriguez. With 7:56 to go in the game, Rodriguez flew threw the air to throw down a one handed alley oop from Khadeen Carrington. This fired up the crowd and was the highlight of the night. In the end the Pirates would come away with a 78-69 win.

Isaiah Whitehead put up 20 points for Seton Hall and added 7 assists. Angel Delgado posted his second straight double double. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The night belonged to Desi Rodriguez though. The sophomore put up 18 points and 11 rebounds. Khadeen Carrington was 3-4 from beyond the arc, and Ismael Sanogo added 6 rebounds. Michael Nzei also had another strong game with 1o points and 5 rebounds.

The Trojans were led by Jordon Varnado who put up 25 points and 11 rebounds. John Walton III had 8 rebounds, and Wesley Person added 14 points. B.J Miller reeled in 7 rebounds, and Jeremy Hollimon chipped in 12 points.

With the loss the Trojans fall to 4-5 on the season and 2-1 away from home. The Pirates improved to 7-2 with the victory and 4-0 at home on the season. The Trojans will now return home to face Paine College on December 17. Meanwhile, the Pirates will be back in action on Sunday at 2:30 against St. Peter’s University.

Pirates Take Down Rebels

The Seton Hall Pirates took on Ole Miss on Sunday in the 5th place game of the Gildan Charleston Classic. The Pirates finished the tournament strong with a 75-63 win over the Ole Miss Rebels. The Pirates improved to 4-1 on the season while Ole Miss fell to 3-2.

The game was very tight in the first half. The largest lead in the first half was 4 points, which was held by each team at one point. In the first half, the Pirates were led by Isaiah Whitehead, Khadeen Carrington, and Desi Rodriguez who each had 5 points. For the Rebels, Sam Finley and Tomasz Gielo each had 7 points in the 1st half. At the end of the first half the score was Ole Miss 31, Seton Hall 30.

The second half started off slowly for both squads. Neither one started to pull away until Isaiah Whitehead hit a 3 pointer to give Seton Hall an 8 point lead with 9:49 remaining in the game. Another Isaiah Whitehead 3 with 8:18 to go put the Hall up 10 and they would never look back. Ultimately, the Pirates would secure a 75-63 win and 5th place in the Gildan Charleston Classic.

The Pirates were led by Isaiah Whitehead who posted 17 points and 5 assists. Of Whitehead’s 17 points, 12 came in the second half. Desi Rodriguez chipped in 12 points and Angel Delgado added 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. For the Rebels, Tomasz Gielo posted 15 points and 5 rebounds. Stefan Moody added 13 points and Marcanvis Hymon grabbed 9 rebounds. Stefan Moody was coming off of a 30 point game and Seton Hall did a great job at minimizing his opportunities.

With the win, the Pirates improved to 4-1. They will return home on Saturday, November 28 to take on the University of Georgia at the Prudential Center. Ole Miss falls to 3-2 and will take on Georgia State in Oxford on Wednesday.

Pirates Set To Take On Jaspers

Seton Hall will finally have its home opener tomorrow against the Manhattan College Jaspers. The pitching matchup for the first game of the series will be RHP Josh Prevost for the Pirates going up against RHP Joey Rocchietti for Manhattan. Prevost has been Mr. Consistency this year for the Pirates, posting a 4-0 record with a 2.40 ERA. Prevost has struck out 26 batters and walked only 4, for a 6.5:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Seton Hall is coming off some impressive offensive performances, scoring 37 runs in the series against the James Madison Dukes. The Pirates have been led by SS D.J. Ruhlman, who has 20 hits and 13 runs scored this year. Third baseman Kyle Grimm and first baseman Sal Annunziata are right behind with 19 hits apiece. Grimm is tied with right fielder Chris Selden for most runs scored with 15. Annunziata leads in several offensive categories. He leads the team in doubles (8) and RBI’s (15), and is second in total bases with 27. Tyler Boyd,  Mikael-Ali Mogues, and Ruhlman are all tied for the lead in homeruns with 2 apiece.

Manhattan has gotten off to a tough start, going 2-10 through their first 12. The Pirates have gotten off to a hot start this season, going 9-3 on the road. They will hope to carry that momentum into their first game at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15.
