Pirates to Play Butler at MSG
Today at 7 PM EST, the Seton Hall Pirates will face the Butler Bulldogs at Madison Square Garden in the annual Big East Tournament, with the winner having the “privilege” to play #3 and top-seeded Villanova. In the past (and only) two meetings between Seton Hall and Butler, Butler has bested the Pirates, including the regular season finale. Senior Fuquan Edwin and company looks to put a stop to that tonight, as this could very well be his last game as a Pirate. Luckily, the Pirates have some good fortune working for them today.
It's our birthday on game day ! Happy birthday to me and my lil bro @JarenSina #Shunited #BirthdayBoys pic.twitter.com/CRVImYDpAb

Even with birthday wishes, there is no way to sugarcoat it: Butler has the Pirates’ number this season. With their latest defeat (which ensured them a losing record), it was an embarrassing 71-54 effort put forth by the boys in blue. However, as detail oriented as HC Kevin Willard is, the Pirates will almost certainly not make the same mistakes again. Seton Hall is even ever so slightly favored to win this game, and they have an entire fan base hoping they do.
While not technically an inaugural tournament, this tournament is the debut of the New Big East. Last year during the conference realignment that saw the “Catholic 7” (Seton Hall, Villanova, St. John’s, Providence, Marquette, DePaul and Georgetown) break away from the D-I football schools (USF, Cincinnati, UConn, among others) to form their own basketball centric conference. During their departure, they made sure to retain the rights to the name “The Big East” as well as the very important conference tournament at Madison Square Garden. If anyone has any doubt, just remember that this is technically the postseason, which means that anything can happen. As always, Hazard Zet Forward and go Pirates!
Pirates Bounce Back in a Big Way
The Pirates did something last night that they had not done in 10 years, and that is sweep the Georgetown Hoyas. The Pirates defeated the Georgetown Hoyas by a score of 82-67 at the Prudential Center. The last sweep came in the 2002-2003 season back when Craig Escherick was the coach of the Hoyas, and Louis Orr was the coach of the Pirates. Seton Hall was led by senior Fuquan Edwin who had 21 points and 5 rebounds. It was Edwin who led the Pirates to their victory at the Verizon Center on January 18. In the two meetings with Georgetown this season, Edwin is averaging 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Edwin was also 3-6 from beyond the arc and added 2 steals.
The Pirates got off to a fast start and never looked back. They led by 9 at the half, and added to their lead in the second half, ultimately winning by 15. In addition to Edwin, three other Pirates were double digit scorers. Sophomore Sterling Gibbs had 18 points to go with a team high 7 assists. Freshman Jaren Sina chipped in 10 points including a pair of 3’s. Seton Hall welcomed back Brian Oliver and Eugene Teague from their brief “attitude” suspensions. Teague had 12 points and a team high 7 rebounds. The Pirates shot 55% from the field, and 47% from beyond the arc.
Georgetown was led by D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Markel Starks who had 20 and 13 points respectively. Next up for the Pirates is a trip to Creighton on Sunday, and the Georgetown Hoyas will host Xavier at the Verizon Center on Saturday.
We will have a full wrap up of the Creighton game, but until then Hazard Zet Forward
Pirates Fail to Rebound
After a crushing defeat at #6 Villanova last week, Fuquan had this to say to the fans, students and alumni of Seton Hall:
We will bounce back for sure #Shumbb
— Fuquan Edwin (@FuquanEdwin) February 8, 2014
Senior Fuquan Edwin has done a pretty good job of keeping his promises to bounce back, like he has done against DePaul and Xavier. Sadly, this time it was not meant to be, with the Pirates losing to the Marquette Golden Eagles 77-66.
Despite jumping out to an 8-0 start, it was pretty much downhill for the Pirates. The highlight of the game was the lack of rebounding by the Pirates, coupled with 10 turnovers very early into the first half. Fuquan had one of his worst statistical games of the season, finishing with only 9 points and 3 rebounds. Senior Brian Oliver lead the Pirates with 15 points. Marquette has always had Seton Hall’s number, winning 13 of their 15 meetings, and swept the home-and-home series between the two schools for the past two seasons. Now the Pirates are 4-7 in the Big East, sitting in the cellar of the conference, ahead of only Butler and DePaul.
Next game is tonight 9 tonight at the Prudential Center against their Hudson River rival St. John’s. After all, the Pirates want revenge for their close loss at St. John’s earlier in the season. Hopefully Fuquan’s promise was just a game early; until then, Hazard Zet Forward.
