The Seton Hall Pirates were in action today at Owen T. Carroll field to take on the Monmouth University Hawks. The Pirates came away with a dramatic 4-3 win to improve to 28-8 while the Hawks fell to 11-20. The pitching matchup was LHP Anthony Pacillo (3-0) for Seton Hall against LHP Anthony Ciavarella (0-0) for the Hawks. The game was scoreless until the 3rd inning when Monmouth got on the board. Second baseman Jake Gronsky flied out to left which allowed Dave Moreno to score and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Pirates answered in the 5th, with RBI singles by Derek Jenkins and Dillon Hamlin. The Pirates added a run in the 8th on an RBI single by SS D.J. Ruhlam to take a 3-1 lead into the 9th inning. In the 9th, the Hawks got an RBI single from SS Grant Lamberton, and another sacrifice fly from Jake Gronsky to tie the score at 3. In the bottom of the inning, Dillon Hamlin led off and was hit by a pitch. Jackson Martin pinch ran for Hamlin. Second baseman Chris Chiaradio reached on a fielders choice, and Martin advanced to third on an error. This set the stage for Derek Jenkins who delivered with a single up the middle to give the Pirates the victory. Anthony Pacillo pitched well for the Pirates, but had to settle for a no decision. The left hander went 7.1 innings, surrendering 9 hits and 1 run while striking out 5. The victory went to Ryan Testani who improved to 2-1 on the season. The loss went to Stephen Frey who fell to 0-2. The Hawks were led by Jake Gronsky who went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s. Grant Lamberton, Dave Moreno, and Chris Gaetano each had 2 hits as well. The Pirates were led by Derek Jenkins who had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Designated hitter Tyler Boyd also chipped in 2 hits for the Pirates.
