The Seton Hall Pirates bounced back from their loss in game 1, to beat the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils 2-0 in game 2 of the double header. The pitching matchup was LHP Anthony Elia (2-2) for the Pirates against RHP Nick Neumann (0-1) for the Blue Devils. The game was scoreless until the 4th, when the Pirates got on the board. After a single from Zack Weigel, Kyle Grimm reached on a fielders choice. Sal Annunziata then laid down a sacrifice bunt. With runners on second and third, designated hitter Tyler Boyd tripled to center field to score Weigel and Grimm. These 2 runs would be the only runs scored in the game. Pitching was the story of the game, as both starters were solid. Neumann went 7 innings, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 8. Matt Blandino pitched the final two innings, and did not give up a hit. Anthony Elia was the real story of the game, registering his first career complete game shutout. Elia surrendered only 4 hits, while striking out 8. With the win, Elia improved to 3-2 on the season, while Neumann fell to 0-2. The Pirates improved to 18-5 on the season, while the Blue Devils fell to 5-7.
Pitching Performance of the Weekend: Anthony Elia-Although it is tough to go against what Josh Prevost has done, Anthony Elia’s first career complete game shutout came on the heels of a tough loss for the Pirates. For that reason, Elia’s performance gets the award. Anthony Elia 9 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, 8 K’s, 0 runs.
MVP of the Weekend: Tyler Boyd- Boyd provided Anthony Elia with some much needed run support with a 2 RBI triple, which allowed the Pirates to split the double header. Boyd, 3 hits, 1 double, 1 triple, 2 RBI’s.
Number of the Weekend: 6, Josh Prevost has walked 6 batters this season. His 6 walks are less than the number of wins that he has. Prevost has 7 wins, and 6 walks.
The Pirates are back in action on Tuesday, in Lawrenceville, NJ, to take on the Rider University Broncos. We will have a full recap of that game when it goes final. Until then, Hazard Zet Forward.
