The Seton Hall Pirates were back in action today as they hosted the Georgetown Hoyas at the Prudential Center. The Pirates were looking to pick up a fourth straight win, and further solidify their NCAA tournament standing. With Providence losing today, the winner of this game would gain sole possession of third place in the Big East. Ultimately, the Pirates would come out on top 69-61.
Both teams came out with a tough attitude and the first half was a very physical one. The two teams traded leads throughout the first half. Angel Delgado had the hot hand for the Pirates, and L.J. Peak had a solid first half for the Hoyas. The three pointer was the main weapon for Peak as he knocked down 3 of them in the first half. Isaiah Whitehead didn’t have his shot in the first half, but other Pirates stepped up to fill the void. The Pirates would end up taking a 30-29 lead into the locker room.
The Hoyas were led in the first half by L.J. Peak with 9 points and 2 rebounds. Jessie Govan and D’Vaunted Smith-Rivera each added 6 points for the Hoyas. Isaac Copeland led the Hoyas with 5 rebounds in the first half. Georgetown shot 30% from the field in the first half and 33.3% from beyond the arc. The Hoyas turned the ball over 8 times in the first half.
The Pirates were led by Angel Delgado with 8 points and 7 rebounds in the first half. Derrick Gordon added 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Isaiah Whitehead led the Pirates with 3 assists. Seton Hall shot 35.3% from the field in the first half and 11.1% from beyond the arc. The Pirates turned the ball over 4 times in the first half.
The second half started the same as the first. The two teams traded leads until 15:19 remaining in the half when Derrick Gordon tied the game at 38. A layup from Khadeen Carrington would give the Pirates a 2 point lead and they would lead the rest of the way. The Pirates would hold off a charge from Georgetown down the stretch. Seton Hall led by as much as 9 points en route to a 69-61 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas.
Georgetown was led by Isaac Copeland who scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. L.J. Peak added 17 points and hauled in 8 rebounds. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera chipped in 11 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists. Marcus Derrickson and Bradley Hayes each grabbed 6 rebounds for the Hoyas. Georgetown shot 33.9% from the floor and 30% from beyond the arc.
Seton Hall was led by Angel Delgado with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Isaiah Whitehead had 16 points and led the team with 4 assists. Ismael Sanogo had a strong game with 7 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Derrick Gordon chipped in 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The Pirates shot 37.1% from the floor and 20% from beyond the arc.
With the loss the Hoyas fall to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in Big East play. With the win the Pirates improve to 17-6 overall and 7-4 in the Big East. The Pirates now take over sole possession of third place in the conference. The Hoyas will now head home to take on the St. John’s Red Storm on Monday. The Pirates will host the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday.
