Peacocks Prevail

The Seton Hall Pirates took the field on a rainy afternoon in South Orange, NJ. The Pirates fought hard, but ultimately were defeated 9-8 to fall to 12-4 on the season while St. Peters improved to 4-12. The pitching matchup was LHP Anthony Pacillo for Seton Hall against LHP  Adam Purcilly. The Peacocks got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Nick Henriquez. Seton Hall was held down until the 4th inning, when right fielder John Beaubien stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Beaubien delivered with an RBI single to center, which scored Tyler Boyd and Sal Annunziata. Later in the inning catcher Dillon Hamlin scored on a throwing error. Seton Hall added to the lead in the 5th on a sacrifice fly from SS D.J. Ruhlman. The Peacocks answered in 6th with 3 runs, and the 7th with 5 runs. The Peacocks got RBI doubles from designated Jim Smith in the 6th, and left fielder Chris Hugg in the 7th. After a rain delay in the 7th, the Pirates began a furious rally. After the bases were loaded in the inning, a walk to D.J. Ruhlman brought in a run, and a groundout by third baseman Kyle Grimm brought home another run. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded again, and Tyler Boyd drew a walk to bring across another run. Going into the 8th, the Pirates were down 9-7. After a two singles and a throwing error, center fielder Zack Weigel flew out to left field, which allowed Chris Chiaradio to score and make it a 1 run game. The Pirates made some noise in the 9th, loading the bases with 1 out, but couldn’t get the big hit, and fell to St. Peters 9-8. The Pirates were led by second baseman Chris Chiaradio who went 3-3 with 2 runs scored. D.J. Ruhlman, and John Beaubien each had 2 RBI’s for the Pirates. The Peacocks were led by Jim Smith with 4 hits, while Chris Hugg and Nick Henriquez each had 3 RBI’s. The losing pitcher for Seton Hall was Zack Prendergast who fell to 0-1 on the year. Paul Schifilliti got the win for the Peacocks and improved to 1-0, while AJ Celentano picked up his first save of the season.

The Pirates will be back in action on Friday to begin a three game series with the Knights of Farleigh Dickinson. The pitching matchup will be Seton Hall RHP Josh Prevost (5-0) going up against Farleigh Dickinson RHP Joe Flack (0-1). First pitch is at 4:15 at Owen T. Carroll Field. Pirates and Peacocks Square Off Tomorrow

The Seton Hall Pirates will take on the Peacocks of St. Peters tomorrow at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates are coming off of a sweep against the Manhattan Jaspers. In the series, the Pirates gave up only 2 runs and scored 13. The Peacocks are coming off of a double header against Temple. Temple took the first game 2-1, but St. Peters won the second game 5-3. The Pirates will look to improve on their 12-3 record, coming off of their third sweep of the young season. The Peacocks are looking for their 4th win of the season, they currently hold a 3-12 record. The Peacocks have been led by SS Jon Kristoffersen who has 23 hits and 7 RBI on the season. Chris Hugg has also stood out for the Peacocks, with 5 doubles and 9 RBI. Zach Hopf has been the leader on the pitching staff, with 25 innings pitched and a solid 7.2 strikeouts per game. The Pirates have been led by SS D.J. Ruhlman who has posted a stellar average of .441 and has 26 hits on the season. When you add in his 5 walks, he has an on base percentage of .500. Ruhlman also leads the team in total bases with 37. First baseman Sal Annunziata leads the team in doubles (9) and runs batted in (17). Center fielder Zack Weigel leads the team in runs scored with 17. On the hill, the Pirates have been led by their ace, senior Josh Prevost. Prevost has posted a 5-0 record with a 1.85 ERA. He has two complete games including a complete game shutout. Opponents have only been hitting .193 off of Josh Prevost.

Josh Prevost and D.J. Ruhlman were honored this week for their performances over the weekend. Prevost was named Big East pitcher of the week the third time this season. Ruhlman was named to the Big East honor roll for the second time this season. Prevost threw his first career complete game shutout to lead the Pirates over the Jaspers. He surrendered only 4 hits and struck out 6 on the day. Ruhlman had a great weekend, with 6 hits and 2 RBI’s. He also had the walk off single on Saturday to win game 2 of the series. Congratulations to both Josh Prevost and D.J. Ruhlman.

Pirates Break Out Brooms…..Again

The Seton Hall Pirates finished off their series with the Manhattan Jaspers with an 8-0 win. The win gave Seton Hall its 3rd sweep of the season. The pitching matchup was Seton Hall RHP Conor Krauss matching up with Manhattan RHP William Fabra. Seton Hall got on the board in the 2nd on an RBI single by right fielder Chris Selden. In the third, third baseman Kyle Grimm grounded into a double play that allowed Zack Weigel to score and make it a 2-0 lead for Seton Hall. From there, pitching was the name of the game as neither team scored until the 7th inning. The Pirates exploded for 5 runs in the inning and got out to a 6-0 lead. In the 8th, Mikael-Ali Mogues scored on a groundout by catcher Alex Falconi. Seton Hall was superb on the mound in this game. Starter Conor Krauss went 4 innings allowing only one hit, and striking out 6. He was followed by Luke Cahill who picked up the win and improved to 3-1 on the season. Cahill went 3 innings while surrendering only 2 hits. Dan Ditusa and Steven Lombardi pitched the final two innings, allowing only a single hit. For Manhattan, starter William Fabra went 5 innings while giving up 6 hits and 2 earned runs. Fabra took the loss and fell to 0-3 on the season. For the Pirates, SS D.J. Ruhlman had 3 hits and a run scored. Right fielder Chris Selden had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s to go along with some stellar defense, and first baseman Sal Annunziata had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Center fielder Zack Weigel also had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. For the Jaspers, center fielder Andrew Gorecki had 2 hits. Seton Hall improved to 12-3 on the season, and Manhattan fell to 2-13.

Pirates Walk Off With A Win

The Seton Hall Pirates took on the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday in game 2 of the 3 game series. The Pirates sent LHP Anthony Elia to the hill against LHP Mike Martin for Manhattan. The Pirates came out on top 3-2 in what proved to be a great day at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Dillon Hamlin got things started with a one out single, and after he stole second, right fielder Chris Selden singled to bring him home for the first run of the game. The Jaspers answered in the 4th on an RBI single by Brendan Slattery. Manhattan added another run in the 5th on a solo homerun by right fielder Jason Patnick. The Pirates responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double by SS D.J. Ruhlman. The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 9th. After Selden flied out, and Chris Chiaradio grounded out, pinch hitter Jackson Martin drew a two out walk. A failed pick off attempt allowed Martin to advance to second, then Zack Weigel was hit by a pitch. This set the stage for D.J. Ruhlman, and he delivered with an RBI single to right center field that scored Martin. It was the first walk off win of the year for the Pirates who improved to 11-3, while the Jaspers fell to 2-12. On the hill, Anthony Elia was solid, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5 in 6 innings. Sam Burum went 2.1 innings and gave up only 1 hit, and Dan Ditusa went .2 of an inning, and picked up the win. For the Jaspers, Mike Martin gave up 2 runs in 5 innings, and LHP Joe Jacques picked up the loss by pitching 3.2 innings and giving up 1 run. Ditusa improved to 1-0 on the season while, Jacques fell to 0-2. The Pirates were led by D.J. Ruhlman who had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. The Jaspers were led by Brendan Slattery who had 2 hits and an RBI.

The Pirates will be looking for the sweep today against Manhattan. The game is at 1 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll Field. The pitching matchup is Seton Hall RHP Conor Krauss (0-0) going up against RHP William Fabra (0-2) for the Jaspers. Krauss will be making his first start of the season. He has pitched well out of the pen, with a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings. Fabra is coming off of a loss to Florida Gulf Coast where he gave up only one hit, but walked 5 in 6 innings. The Pirates will look to keep the momentum going in this series and try to break out the brooms for a third time this season. We will have a full recap of the final game of the series later today.
