The Seton Hall Pirates took the field on a rainy afternoon in South Orange, NJ. The Pirates fought hard, but ultimately were defeated 9-8 to fall to 12-4 on the season while St. Peters improved to 4-12. The pitching matchup was LHP Anthony Pacillo for Seton Hall against LHP Adam Purcilly. The Peacocks got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Nick Henriquez. Seton Hall was held down until the 4th inning, when right fielder John Beaubien stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Beaubien delivered with an RBI single to center, which scored Tyler Boyd and Sal Annunziata. Later in the inning catcher Dillon Hamlin scored on a throwing error. Seton Hall added to the lead in the 5th on a sacrifice fly from SS D.J. Ruhlman. The Peacocks answered in 6th with 3 runs, and the 7th with 5 runs. The Peacocks got RBI doubles from designated Jim Smith in the 6th, and left fielder Chris Hugg in the 7th. After a rain delay in the 7th, the Pirates began a furious rally. After the bases were loaded in the inning, a walk to D.J. Ruhlman brought in a run, and a groundout by third baseman Kyle Grimm brought home another run. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded again, and Tyler Boyd drew a walk to bring across another run. Going into the 8th, the Pirates were down 9-7. After a two singles and a throwing error, center fielder Zack Weigel flew out to left field, which allowed Chris Chiaradio to score and make it a 1 run game. The Pirates made some noise in the 9th, loading the bases with 1 out, but couldn’t get the big hit, and fell to St. Peters 9-8. The Pirates were led by second baseman Chris Chiaradio who went 3-3 with 2 runs scored. D.J. Ruhlman, and John Beaubien each had 2 RBI’s for the Pirates. The Peacocks were led by Jim Smith with 4 hits, while Chris Hugg and Nick Henriquez each had 3 RBI’s. The losing pitcher for Seton Hall was Zack Prendergast who fell to 0-1 on the year. Paul Schifilliti got the win for the Peacocks and improved to 1-0, while AJ Celentano picked up his first save of the season.
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday to begin a three game series with the Knights of Farleigh Dickinson. The pitching matchup will be Seton Hall RHP Josh Prevost (5-0) going up against Farleigh Dickinson RHP Joe Flack (0-1). First pitch is at 4:15 at Owen T. Carroll Field.
