“Inside The Enemy Ship” Central Connecticut State Blue Devils

Welcome to the first edition of “Inside The Enemy Ship”! The Pirates will come off of their season opening win against Farleigh Dickinson to face the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at the Prudential Center on Sunday. We had the chance to ask Dillon Meehan, a writer at the Central Recorder, for his thoughts on the game.

1: CCSU has brought on Donyell Marshall to coach the team. How do you see this team transforming under his leadership? DM: It’s tough to say only one game into the season, but offensively this is a much more efficient team.  They’re playing with more pace and ball movement which is always tougher to defend.

2: Where do you see CCSU finishing in the conference this year? DM: This is a team that’s gone 6-30 the past two years in conference play and have been dead last the past two seasons.  There looks to be an improvement but anything better than a middle of the road finish in the conference standings would be surprising.

3: What player should Seton Hall be most worried about facing? DM: Austin Nehls, he shot 38% from three last season and was 4-7 in the opener.  His ability to find open space combined with his quick release and CCSU’s ball movement make it tough for teams to keep him contained.

4: What does coach Marshall need to do to get this program on the right track? DM: They need to learn how to finish. Time and time again CCSU would watch an early lead fade away and give games away in the final five minutes. That almost happened again in the opener but they went on a 13-0 run in a span of three minutes when Hartford cut the lead to four.  That’s something that last year’s team never could do.

5: What is the biggest key to this game for CCSU? DM: Consistency on offense.  They’ve looked rather streaky so far this season.  They need to learn to not rely on big runs to bail them out.

6: What do you see the final score being? DM: 104-75 Seton Hall.  Offensively they should be able to keep up, but Seton Hall just beat a solid FDU team by 20, tough to imagine CCSU doing better than one of the top teams in their own conference.

Tip off is at 2 PM on Sunday and can be viewed on FS1. Big thanks to Dillon Meehan for answering our questions! He can be found on twitter @IVIeehan. Until then, Hazard Zet Forward.

Season Opener: FDU Game Primer

Stockton vs. FDU_16-02-26_0240

Pirate fans, it has been a long time coming, but the reigning Big East Champions are back in action for the first time since their premature exit of the NCAA Tournament tonight, live from Historic Walsh Gymnasium. Fellow 2016 NCAA Tournament Team Fairleigh Dickinson is coming down the Garden State Parkway for the first game of the season in what should be a tremendous win by the Pirates, impressing an impressive slate of requites who will be at the game. With a banner ceremony before the game, the Pirates have every reason to make a “statement win” in front a sellout crowd during their one game on campus this season.

The core of the Pirates still remains from last season, but there will no doubt be big shoes left to fill with star Isaiah Whitehead going to his hometown Brooklyn Nets in the NBA. Graduate transfer Derrick Gordon’s role, who ran out of years of college legibility, will likely be replaced with another graduate transfer, Madison Jones. While Fairleigh Dickinson is returning most of their team from last season, the Pirates should still make easy work with them, but keep an eye on FDU Forward Earl Potts, named to the NEC’s preseason all-conference team, who could easily be an impact player in tonight’s game. Several members of the Pirates talked about how not being ranked in the Top 25 provides a bunch of motivation for the team, saying how they do best when they are being “disrespected”. Let’s hope that shows up on the court tonight!

As always, Hazard Zet Forward! Look forward to the first “Inside the Enemy Ship” coming before this Sunday’s game against CCSU!

Hall Announces Non-Conference Schedule

The Seton Hall Pirates basketball program has announced its non-conference schedule for the 2016-17 season. The Pirates will kick off the season with a meeting against in-state rival Farleigh Dickinson at historic Walsh Gymnasium on November 11. The first game at the Prudential Center will be on November 13 when the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils pay a visit.

The Pirates will participate in the Gavitt Games on November 17 when they head to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the University of Iowa. A week later the Pirates will head to Orlando for the Advocare Invitational. On Thanksgiving night they will take on the University of Florida. The next day the Pirates will either face Quinnipiac or the team they lost to in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, the Gonzaga Bulldogs. It isn’t determined who the Pirates will play in the tournament on November 27.

On December 1 the Pirates will return to the Prudential Center to take on Columbia. Seton Hall will then head out to Honolulu, Hawaii to take part in the Fox Sports Pearl Harbor Invitational. They will play Hawaii on December 6, and the University of California on December 7. On December 12 the Pirates return to Madison Square Garden to take on the University of South Carolina in the Under Armour Reunion.

Seton Hall returns home on December 17 when they take on the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens at the Prudential Center. The final non-conference opponent is the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the annual Garden State Hardwood Classic. The Pirates currently have the trophy and will look to defend it on their home floor on December 23.

The Pirates have plenty of challenges in their non-conference schedule. We will have full coverage of the games throughout the season. Until then, Hazard Zet Forward.
